Coaching, one of three

Executive coaching

The International Coaching Federation describes coaching as a partnership that provokes thought and maximizes personal and professional potential. In practical terms: I do not arrive with your answer. I ask the questions that lead to the one you already hold somewhere, and then ensure that something is done with it.

What leaders usually bring

It is almost always something specific that has been open for months. A decision that no one will close. A relationship that costs far more energy than it should. Or a pattern that appears whenever there is pressure, which everyone nearby has long since stopped mentioning.

Some typical examples

A team that has stopped bringing you problems, which resembles peace and is usually its opposite. A promotion that has somehow not landed. A way of working that was well suited one level ago and no longer serves at this one. Or conversations that have quietly become harder than they were, without a single moment to point to.

Questions people ask

How does this differ from mentoring or consulting?

A mentor describes what they would do in your position; a consultant studies the situation and recommends a course of action; coaching helps you reach and act on what you already know but have not yet put into words.

How many sessions are usually taken?

Six is the smallest number that changes anything durably. Most clients take between six and twelve across four to six months.

Can my organization sponsor it?

Yes, and most do. Goals are agreed with the sponsor at the outset and reviewed at the end, while the content of the sessions remains between us.
